In Person History Talk: "Searching the Northwest Passage" with Historian Bob Begin

In Person History Talk: "Searching the Northwest Passage" with Historian Bob Begin In-Person

This will be an in person lecture in the Keys Community Room, starting at 7 PM, with Historian Bob Begin.

The Northwest Passage  is a sea route over northern Canada which was thought to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via the Arctic Ocean . Great Britain, with her Royal Navy, and global shipping capability was obsessed with the exploration and transit of this region which would enhance her trade in the East and also eliminate thousands of miles of transit to the East.  By the beginning of the 19th Century, England would prioritize finding a route opening to the Pacific. England -  with her obsessive thirst for new trade and territory -  would launch several expeditions, the  most famous being that of Sir John Franklin in 1845 and 1848.  Both ships, HMS Erebus and Terror,  were trapped in the ice resulting in the entire crew of 129 men  being lost. And yet, further expeditions to solve this mystery continue, yielding more information.

Mr. Begin is an avid history fan and devotes his research to interesting and inspiring topics from American chronology.  He grew up in Lewiston, ME, graduated from Babson College in 1965, and then served 2 years in the Army - both stateside and a little while in Panama.  He then moved to Boston and got a job with St. Regis Paper Company, and worked there for 35 years, eventually as Logistics Manager.  He married in 1967 and started a family, but always continued his thirst for history, especially naval history.  Now we all have the pleasure of enjoying his accessible and enthusiastic programs about interesting historical subjects!

For more details depicting courage and struggle and man against the elements, please attend this talk on Tuesday, May 27th.
