Virtual Naturalist Talk: "The Restoration of Bird Island" with Photographer Bob Michelson Online
Please join us this evening via Zoom for a fascinating talk about the restoration of Bird Island which is a tiny island off the coast of Buzzards Bay at the mouth of Sippican Harbor on Cape Cod, less than a mile from Marion, Massachusetts.
Naturalist and photographer Bob Michelson travels out into Buzzards Bay to spend a couple days with bird researchers, as they study the Federally Endangered Roseate tern, and Common tern on Bird Island. There is an effort to repopulate this small island in the middle of the Bay, that had previously been over-washed by several hurricanes, greatly diminishing the available critical habitat of these small coastal birds. Mass Wildlife then decided to build the island back up to its' historic height above sea level, making it safe once again for the birds to return in-masse, nest, and recover their populations. Follow the complete life histories of both species, along with current research taking place, and before, and after photos of the island's rebirth from near ruins!
