Wednesday Monthly Movie: "Glory" in Honor of the End of the Civil War 160 Years Ago - April 9, 1865

Wednesday Monthly Movie: "Glory" in Honor of the End of the Civil War 160 Years Ago - April 9, 1865 In-Person

There will be a free screening of the incredible and celebrated film called "Glory" shown in the Keys Community Room starting at 6:30 PM.  We have chosen this title as it has been 160 years (this month) that the Civil War ended (that date is: April 9, 1865).

Based on the true story of the first black regiment to fight for the North in the Civil War, Robert Gould Shaw and Cabot Forbes are two idealistic young Bostonians that lead the regiment.  Sgt. Major John Rawlins is the inspiration who unites the troops.  Private Trip is a runaway slave who joins the regiment. The cast includes Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman, Jihmi Kennedy, Andre Braugher, Cliff DeYoung, Alan North, Peter Michael Goetz, Bob Gunton and Jay O. Sanders.

This movie was produced by Freddie Fields, directed by Edward Zwick and the screenplay was written by Kevin Jarre.  It won 14 Oscars at the Academy Awards in 1990, including Best Supporting Actor by Denzel Washington.  It was nominated 18 times by the Academy Awards that year, and was also nominated for many other awards, including the Golden Globes. The rating is R for war violence, racism and mature themes.  It is not suitable for children under the age of 16.  The running time is 2 hrs, 2 minutes.  If you have not seen this film, please join us!

One viewer (quoted at IMDB) said this about "Glory:"   "Still, in the end, "Glory" isn't about big, noisy battles. It's about the transcendence of the human spirit in the face of bigotry, bad treatment, and almost certain death. It's about a watershed moment in our bloody history that elevated us all and must never be forgotten. "Glory" is, indeed, glorious."

This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and, again, is not recommended for children.   No registration is required to attend, the program is free, and for questions, Email jhlady@milton.ocln.org or call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964.
